Schwarzman Scholar Who Studied in China Pursues International Law
Isabel Ayala, ’27, from Houston, Texas, holds a BA in Asian studies and government from the University of Texas at Austin and a master’s degree in global affairs from Tsinghua University in Beijing, China, where she studied as a Schwarzman Scholar. During her time abroad, Ayala explored many provinces, connected with many people, and fully immersed herself in Chinese culture. Her experiences greatly shaped her global perspective and desire to pursue a career in diplomacy.
Please describe your professional background and path.
During my undergraduate studies, I concentrated on US engagement in the Indo-Pacific, with a particular focus on multilateralism and cultural identity. My internships at organizations such as Brookings, the Center for Strategic and International Studies, and the East-West Center further enriched my perspective. As a Schwarzman Scholar, I completed my master's in global affairs at Tsinghua University last year.
What key experiences have shaped you?
My time as a Schwarzman Scholar cemented my desire to pursue a career rooted in diplomacy. While living in Beijing and traveling through more than fifteen provinces, I was deeply engaged with Chinese culture and connected with remarkable people. These experiences highlighted for me how personal interactions can drive meaningful and lasting societal bonds.
What motivated your decision to go to law school?
Understanding the complexities of law and practicing as a lawyer is the most impactful way for me to drive meaningful change within global institutions. International law underpins the liberal international system, offering a framework for leaders to work together on resolving intricate global challenges.
Why did you select the University of Chicago Law School?
I am eager to learn from the top experts in the legal field, and the faculty at UChicago Law stand out as the most impressive in the country. Their guidance fosters an environment of intellectual excellence at the Law School.
What do you plan to do with your legal education?
I hope to be solving complex challenges in international law, whether at a government agency, a global institution, or a law firm specializing in international arbitration. My goal is to leverage cultural understanding and diplomatic engagement to mediate and resolve cross-border disputes effectively.
What is the thing you are most looking forward to about being a law student?
Being surrounded by brilliant peers! UChicago Law’s student body is a key contributor to the school's distinction. I am eager to engage with my classmates and delve into complex legal issues together.
What are some of your hobbies or interests?
I enjoy cooking and experimenting with new recipes. I also love hiking and being out in nature. More recently, I’ve picked up Tunisian crocheting to make hats and scarves for the winter weather.
What is a “fun fact” about you?
I have a deep love for animals and grew up with as many as eight pets at one time.

I am excited to join the UChicago and Hyde Park communities! I hope to make lifelong friends and make a meaningful impact during my time at the Law School.
