Join Professors Sonja Starr and Alison Siegler to discuss the Biden administration’s priorities for reforming the criminal legal system. They will contextualize those priorities by describing Department of Justice priorities during past administrations, including policy directives regarding bail, charging, plea bargaining, and sentencing. Professor Siegler will discuss her New York Times Op-Ed calling on Attorney General Merrick Garland to prioritize federal bail reform in a way that past administrations have not. Professor Starr will provide reflections based on her experience clerking for Attorney General Merrick Garland.

The Martha C. Nussbaum Student Roundtables support the University of Chicago’s longstanding commitment to free expression and open discourse. The roundtables were endowed by Professor Nussbaum in 2019 with the intent of bringing together students and faculty with diverse, and often disparate ideological viewpoints in a respectful discussion. Students are encouraged to engage and confront ideas that may be different from their own with a spirit of civil and vigorous debate.

Limited space is available for this event. You will receive an email if you are confirmed to attend.
