Meena Datta, '03: Honored as One of Law360's Rising Stars in the Category of Health Care

Rising Star: Sidley Austin's Meena Datta

Sidley Austin LLP partner Meena Datta has worked on standout matters in the health care field, such as reeling in Fortive’s $2.7 billion purchase of Johnson & Johnson’s medical sterilization unit, and has become an industry authority in guiding crucial regulatory compliance efforts for clients, earning her a spot among five health care law practitioners honored by Law360 as Rising Stars.

How she got into it:

One doesn’t simply become global co-leader of Sidley Austin’s health care practice by accident, but Datta admits she didn’t leave law school with the intention of jumping into the health care industry. She’d had an innate interest in health care, insurance and that “part of society,” she said, but she came to Sidley Austin after graduation with an open mind, ready to try a variety of practices.

It wasn’t until after jumping into a health care-related project during the firm’s summer program that something clicked.

“I'm sure if I'd focused on studying economics or finance, maybe I would have an interest in some of those other areas, but I did focus on the humanities in undergrad and there is a natural progression from that kind of focus to something with a societal impact,” Datta said.
