Steven Cherny, '91, and Patrick Curran, '04: Leading the Charge to Set Up Boston Office

Quinn Emanuel Sets Up Shop in Boston

Litigation powerhouse Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan LLP has opened an office in Boston.

The firm, which already has 21 offices worldwide, will focus on intellectual property matters in Boston, where there are thriving high tech, biotech, and financial services industries.

IP is Quinn Emanuel’s biggest practice area, according to it’s website, and the firm counts Google, IBM, Johnson & Johnson, Samsung, SONY, Symantec, and Qualcomm among its clients.

“We have been looking at Boston for a long time,” Managing Partner John B. Quinn said in a Dec. 26 statement emailed to Bloomberg Law. “We are convinced there is a market for a top tier litigation-only firm that is relatively free of the conflicts which full service firms have. Boston is also a high-tech hotbed,” Quinn said.

Partners Steven Cherny, Patrick Curran, and Sandra Bresnick, from Quinn Emanuel’s New York office, will get the ball rolling in Boston.

Curran anticipates that the Boston office will handle traditional contractual disputes, competitor disputes, regulatory investigations, and other issues, he told Bloomberg Law in a Dec. 27 interview.

Curran focuses on IP, as well as securities litigation and financial litigation. He’s represented EMC, Google, HTC, and Pfizer, among others, according to his firm bio.

Cherny holds a mechanical engineering degree from MIT and he’s built his career on IP litigation, representing Cisco, IBM, Motorola Solutions, and NetGear, according to the firm’s website. He just joined Quinn in 2017 from Kirkland Ellis, where he had practiced since 2008. Moving to Boston is like “going home,” Cherny said in a statement.

Sandra Bresnick specializes in litigating pharmaceutical and medical device cases. Among her clients are Colgate-Palmolive Company, Forest Laboratories LLC, and Merck & Co. Inc., according to her bio.
