James Barton Duncan

James Barton Duncan, of San Francisco, California, passed away on September 29, 2017, after a courageous, two-year battle with cancer.

Bart, as he was known by all his family and friends, was born in Provo, Utah, on September 15, 1958, to James S. Duncan and Carma B. Duncan. He grew up in Springville, Utah, the oldest of five children.

Bart was born a star and his talents and accomplishments were immeasurable. He had a brilliant mind, an irresistible smile and a keen sense of humor. A gifted pianist and a master of the English language, Bart was passionate and caring.

After graduating with High Honors from Springville High School, Bart served an LDS mission to Vienna, Austria, where he learned to speak fluent German. Afterwards, Bart attended Brigham Young University, where he graduated summa cum laude. In 1984, he went on to graduate with honors from The University of Chicago Law School, as a member of the Law Review and Order of the Coif.

Upon graduation, Bart was heavily recruited and excepted an offer with the law firm of Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro, in San Francisco, where he served as Senior Council for 13 years. In 1997, he went to work for the San Francisco City Attorney’s Office as Deputy City Attorney, on the Government and Contracts team. During his time with the City Attorney’s Office Bart was tapped to be the Executive Director for the San Francisco Health Service System, where he implemented many innovative ideas and governance.
