Safe Spaces and Trigger Warnings Panel

11/17, Room I from 4-6 p.m., reception to follow discussion

UChicago’s comments about safe spaces and trigger warnings in its letter to undergrads this summer made quite a few headlines. There doesn’t seem to be a common understanding of what constitutes a safe space or a trigger warning, and those two terms often have been used interchangeably despite them being quite different. As future lawyers, it is critical to our success to be able to tailor our language carefully in order to express ourselves with precision and respect. As agents of the law as well, we must have a nuanced understanding of the ideals of free speech and what exactly constitutes a restriction on that freedom. Please join the following panelists for a discussion moderated by Dean Shannon Bartlett with an aim to define these terms and examine how these definitions have been and can be operationalized:

-Professor Emily Buss
-Professor Herschella Conyers
-Professor M. Todd Henderson
-Ronnie Rios, Deputy Director and Assistant Dean of Students in the Center for Identity + Inclusion
