Several Law School professors were among the scholars of policy and law that gathered at the University of Chicago Center in Delhi for three days in December to explore the roles of stigma and disgust in discrimination. Presenters at the conference, “Prejudice, Stigma, Discrimination: Combatting Exclusions through Policy and Law,” examined exclusions related to race, caste, class, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, and religion in both India and the United States and explored legal and social remedies.

Martha C. Nussbaum, the Ernst Freund Distinguished Service Professor of Law, was one of the co-organizers of the conference along with Professor Emerita Zoya Hasan of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi and Vidhu Verma, Professor in the Centre for Political Studies at JNU. Nussbaum delivered an introductory talk and discussed age discrimination. Other Law School participants and contributors included Saul Levmore, whose paper on age discrimination was delivered by Lecturer Dorothy Shapiro, a Bigelow Teaching Fellow; Justin Driver, the Harry N. Wyatt Professor of Law, who discussed race in the United States; Aziz Huq, the Frank and Bernice J. Greenberg Professor of Law, who discussed the Muslim community; Laura Weinrib, Assistant Professor of Law and the Herbert and Marjorie Fried Teaching Scholar, who discussed class; and Richard McAdams, the Bernard D. Meltzer Professor of Law, who discussed theories of discrimination. Emily Dupree, ’18, who is also a third-year PhD student in Philosophy, discussed women.
