Nathaniel I. Grey, ’57

Nathaniel I. Grey, ’57 died on April 21 at the age of 91. A devoted alumnus, Grey's life and career were marked by an unwavering commitment to public service, mentorship, and the transformative power of legal discovery.

Grey served as a trustee of the Bernard Heerey Family Foundation, through which he played a pivotal role in supporting law students pursuing public interest work.

In a fall 2016 profile piece highlighting his visit with three recent Heerey Fellowship recipients, Grey emphasized the joys of legal discovery, asking them, “Have you had the experience of the ‘aha!’ yet?” He believed that such moments of insight were among the greatest pleasures of practicing law, especially when serving the public good.

“The law gives you a chance to find a flash of light, a brilliance, a discovery,” Grey continued in the 2016 article. “[W]hen it comes during public service, we have something more than just lawyering involved—we have the public good.”

A funeral service was held on April 22 at Shalom Memorial Funeral Home in Arlington Heights, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial donations be made to One Family Together, reflecting Grey's lifelong dedication to community and service.
