How did you connect with this summer opportunity?
I found this opportunity through a job posting on Symplicity.
How does your experience connect with what you currently envision doing with your law degree?
I entered law school with an interest in environmental law, which this position allowed me to explore in greater depth. I was able to learn more about work in the policy and nonprofit space. Additionally, I developed my legal research and writing skills, which will aid me in other legal careers.
Please describe a “typical” day at work.
A typical day at work often involved researching different legal questions and outlining my findings in a memo. We also had weekly team meetings to discuss our progress and ask questions. I was also able to meet with clients virtually to better understand their research questions and goals.
What is something you learned or experienced that was surprising or particularly compelling during this summer position?
A significant part of my research this summer involved looking at administrative procedures that regulate how utility companies can set rates. I was surprised to learn that in some states, private utility companies are not regulated by any governmental body.
What are a couple of your key takeaways from the experience so far?
Working for a nonprofit can be a great way to gain substantive experience in a particular area of the law, but it is less structured than working in a law firm. Because of this, it’s important to advocate for yourself and express interest in different projects.
What advice would you offer another law student contemplating working in a similar position next summer?
The summer after 1L is a great time to explore a new place or field that you are interested in. It can also help you expand your network and develop unique skills.
How are you spending your free time this summer?
I have been spending lots of time outdoors, playing trivia with friends, and catching up on my reading goals for the year.
What are you most looking forward to in returning to UChicago Law this fall?
I am most excited to see my friends and go to my favorite coffee shops in Hyde Park.
