Rising Star: Simpson Thacher's Sam Rudik

Sam Rudik, a recently promoted partner at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP, guided Blackstone on several billion-dollar transactions over the past three years, including a handful of major development deals and acquisitions involving data centers, landing him a spot among real estate attorneys under age 40 honored by Law360 as Rising Stars.

The biggest deal of his career:

Rudik advised Blackstone on its $10 billion acquisition of QTS Realty Trust, a real estate investment trust operating data centers across the U.S. and in the Netherlands. The 2021 transaction saw the asset management giant scoop up over 7 million square feet of digital infrastructure properties.

The acquisition was Rudik's first time leading a take-private deal as a senior associate.

"I was managing a large team on a very complicated transaction," Rudik said.

It was also one of his first deals in data centers, an asset class that, compared to offices or other types of buildings, typically has unique lease structures and involves more infrastructure.

"Getting smart on a new asset class in the middle of a fast-moving transaction was a challenge in and of itself," he said.
