Sam Cole, ’25, Wins CPR’s 2025 Joseph T. McLaughlin Original Student Article Award
Sam Cole, ’25, has received the 2025 Joseph T. McLaughlin Original Student Article Award from the International Institute of Conflict Prevention and Resolution (CPR).
The award recognizes outstanding scholarship on contemporary issues in alternative dispute resolution (ADR), honoring a student-authored article written between November 2023 and October 2024.
Cole received the award for his paper, “Bargaining in the Shadow of the EFAA,” which explores the complex interplay between arbitration agreements in collective bargaining agreements and those in contracts with at-will employees under the Ending Forced Arbitration of Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment Act (EFAA). His analysis highlights key ambiguities in the law’s application to unionized workers and proposes innovative legal solutions to address these gaps.
The paper is set to be published in the University of Missouri School of Law’s Journal on Dispute Resolution in 2025.
“To have my research recognized by CPR, a leader in dispute resolution, is an extraordinary honor," Cole said. “I am particularly grateful to Professor Ariana Levinson for her invaluable feedback and thoughtful comments that helped strengthen this article, and to my mom, Professor Sarah Cole, for her exceptional mentorship throughout my academic (and life) journey.”
