John Rappaport on Eaton County's Liability Insurance Premiums Following Police Shooting
Expert: Eaton County's insurance costs likely to rise after $2.4M settlement
EATON COUNTY - Eaton County taxpayers likely won't have an idea of the full costs of a federal lawsuit the county settled last week with the family of 17-year-old Deven Guilford until next summer.
Guilford was shot and killed by Eaton County Sgt. Jonathan Frost during a traffic stop in February of 2015. Eaton County's insurer agreed to the $2.4 million settlement with the Guilford family, of which Eaton County was responsible for the first $150,000.
The county should expect its liability insurance premiums to rise and there's a possibility its insurer may insist on changes to the way the sheriff department operates, said John Rappaport, a University of Chicago professor, who has researched how liability insurers affect policing throughout the country.
