Cafaro's Ventas real estate investment trust owns almost 1,300 senior housing and health care properties and is currently valued at $22 billion. Cafaro was brought on in 1999 to turn the struggling REIT around, and she's done a solid job. In 2016, the company gave investors a 16% return, and Cafaro led an acquisition of a $1.5 billion portfolio of life-sciences properties. The daughter of a Pittsburgh mailman, and the longest-serving female CEO of an S&P 500 company, Cafaro paid a reported $25 million to become a minority owner of the Pittsburgh Penguins hockey team.
