"Unmaking Structural Violence Through Truth-Seeking Experiences: A Look at the Final Report of the Colombian Truth Commission" with Mr. Daniel Marin-Lopez of Harvard’s Carr Center for Human Rights Policy
Room V
1111 East 60th Street, Chicago, Illinois 60637
On 28th June 2022, the newest report made by a Truth Commission was released in Colombia making it the first of such a kind in this decade, and the longest ever written by a TC worldwide. The importance of its work resides in the novelty of their approaches to structural violence to understand the bloodiest armed conflict of the hemisphere, and the multiple methodologies that were implemented to fulfill its mandate within a broader Transitional Justice Policy in the Country. Former TC Advisor Daniel Marín-López will discuss the main highlights of the findings of the Colombian TC in connection with new revindications made in Colombia and elsewhere on racial, economic, and gender justice, and their implications in the way of working and recommendations made to generate non-repetition policies.
Daniel Marín-López researches the relationship between corporate accountability, war to peace transition processes and the political economy of armed conflict. As an expert advisor on corporate complicity at the Colombian Truth Commission, he contributed to the collective work of researchers to establish extrajudicial responsibilities of economic actors in grave human rights violations committed during the internal armed conflict.
He previously worked at Dejusticia, a Colombia-based human rights research and advocacy organization dedicated to the promotion of social justice in the Global South, where he focused on issues of transitional justice, the Colombian armed conflict, and business and human rights, and was a legal aid for the “Transitional Justice in Colombia - ProFis” program of the German Cooperation Agency (GIZ).
Daniel is a Transitional Justice Fellow at Harvard’s Carr Center for Human Rights Policy, and lecturer on “Business, Development and Human Rights” at Universidad de los Andes (Bogotá, Colombia), and on “Critical Studies of Human Rights” at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana (Bogotá, Colombia). His most recent publication is “Rebels at War, Criminals in Peace: A critical approach to violence in Colombia" (Rethinking Marxism, 2021) with Sebastián Ronderos.
Daniel studied Political Science (B.A.) and Law (J.D.) at Universidad de Los Andes (Bogotá, Colombia), and was an International Human Rights Fellow at Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law, where he studied a LL.M (honors).
