Capitalist democracy is under stress. The European Union is engulfed in a sovereign debt crisis that threatens its very existence, while the United States is facing its own potentially devastating public finance crunch. On both sides of the Atlantic, the institutions of democracy are gridlocked, and viable long term policy solutions are lacking. The crisis has exposed the inner tensions of capitalism and its tenuous relationship with western democracy. What is the appropriate institutional architecture to manage capitalist democracy? What role should the different branches of government, businesses, and central banks play? Join The Chicago Council for a conversation with Judge Richard A. Posner on the lessons to be learned from the current situation and the reforms needed to prevent another depression.  

The Honorable Richard A. Posner is a judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit since 1981 and a senior lecturer at The University of Chicago Law School. He served as chief judge of the court from 1993 to 2000. Prior to this, he was Lee and Brena Freeman Professor of Law at the University of Chicago and an associate professor at Stanford Law School. He worked for several years in Washington as a law clerk to Justice William J. Brennan Jr., as assistant to the commissioner of the Federal Trade Commission and the solicitor general of the United States, and as general counsel of President Johnson’s Task Force on Communications Policy. He was also a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research and the first president of Lexecon Inc., a private consulting firm. Judge Posner has published many books, articles, and book reviews, and founded the Journal of Legal Studies. He received his B.A. from Yale University, a J.D. from Harvard Law School, and holds a number of honorary degrees.
