Conflicts around the world, including in Ukraine, Palestine, and Sudan, have renewed attention to how we obtain truth and justice for mass atrocities. Dr. Luis Fondebrider, a leading forensic anthropologist, will discuss the challenges of documenting human rights violations, bridging the law and science, and advancing accountability, in conversation with Professor Anjli Parrin. Drawing on his work in more than 55 countries around the world over almost 40 years, Dr. Fondebrider will provide a first-hand look at how multidisciplinary investigations of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide work in practice, and the challenges of responding to mass atrocities.
Dr. Luis Fondebrider is a forensic anthropologist from Argentina, and a co-founder and former President of the Argentine Forensic Anthropology Team. He has spent 39 years working in over 55 countries to investigate and document human rights violations, exhume mass graves, and support families affected. He has advised and served as an expert witness for numerous international tribunals, hybrid courts, truth commissions, and commissions of inquiry. From 2021-2022, he was appointed the head of the Forensic Services Unit of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), responsible for overseeing one of the largest forensic teams working in conflicts around the world. Dr. Fondebrider is now an independent forensic consultant.
