Geoffrey R. Stone, a constitutional law professor at the University of Chicago Law School, will be speaking at the University of California, San Diego Monday at 6 p.m.

He will give the DeWitt Higgs Memorial Lecture in the East Ballroom of the Price Center at UCSD. California Western School of Law is a co-presenter of the event, and the public is invited to attend.

Stone’s talk, “Citizens United and the Role of the Supreme Court in a Self-Governing Society,” will look back at last January’s landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision that gave corporations rights similar to individuals, and discuss its implications on democracy in America.

Stone is the Edward H. Levi Distinguished Service Professor of Law at the University of Chicago Law School, where he has taught since 1973.

He has won numerous awards for his writing, including the Robert F. Kennedy Book Award, the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, and the Harvard University Goldsmith Award.

Stone serves as editor of Supreme Court Review and contributes frequently to the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Chicago Tribune, and Huffington Post.

He is a member of the American Law Institute and is on the National Board of Directors of the American Constitution Society.

The DeWitt Higgs Memorial Lecture honors DeWitt “Dutch” Higgs, a 1934 graduate of California Western School. He founded the law firm of Higgs, Fletcher and Mack and served as the region’s first representative on the University of California Board of Regents.

In recognition of his contributions to the law, education, and academic freedom, California Western and UCSD, in conjunction with the Higgs family, present the DeWitt Higgs Memorial Lecture each year.
