Diversity Month: ACS and OutLaw present Supreme Court Litigator Paul Smith on the Current Status of Litigation to Promote LGBT Rights
ACS and OutLaw present a Diversity Month talk by Supreme Court litigator Paul Smith on the current status of litigation to promote LGBT rights.
Fresh from his oral argument before the Supreme Court in Schwarzenegger v. Entertainment Merchants Association (a First Amendment challenge to California's ban on the sale of "violent" video games to minors and the topic for the moot court competition in the fall), Mr. Smith will survey cases challenging the Defense of Marriage Act; Proposition 8; Don't Ask, Don't Tell; and more. Mr. Smith is a partner at Jenner & Block's DC office, a member of the firm's governing Policy Committe, and the recipient of the ABA Section of Individual Rights and Responsibilities' 2010 Thurgood Marshall Award in recognition of his work promoting LGBT rights, voting rights, and the freedom of speech. His previous oral arguments before the Supreme Court include Celotex Corp. v. Catrett and Lawrence v. Texas. Lunch will be provided. Thanks to the Dean of Students Office for Diversity Month co-sponsorship.
